Cher’s Free the Wild animal welfare charity has been fighting to free an Asian elephant from horrendous captivity at Marghzar Zoo in Islamabad.

Kaavan, a male elephant in his thirties, spent most of his life chained inside a solitary pen at the zoo. After the public campaigned for his release for months, Pakistan’s Senate Standing Committee finally removed Kaavan’s chains in July last year. The elephant had spent his life in abusive conditions and suffered from mental health issues as a result of his neglect and loneliness, experts found.

Despite the committee agreeing Kaavan should be moved to a different location, he is still held at Marghzar Zoo more than a year later. Determined to rescue Kaavan, Cher has offered to fundraise for his transfer to the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary. “Cher says that she believes in freedom for Kavaan, because the elephant has spent too long in a bad and damaging situation,” the singer’s representative and old friend Mark Cowne told World Animal News. “Cher says please give the lone elephant his freedom and his dignity by setting him free.”

Free the Wild hope to gather enough funds to move Kavaan before the end of the year.
