Charlize Theron is known for portraying complex and strong women in her movies. But, in real life, she draws courage from a special person – her mum.

Hollywood leading lady, Charlize Theron, spoke on Monday night during the Elle’s Women in Hollywood event where she was an honoree, on the #MeToo movement, Donald Trump and her inspirational mum.

Theron reflected on #MeToo and how the movement has changed Hollywood.

“I feel like for me the most important thing is that it’s pretty impossible to go anywhere and not have people talk about this,” she told Variety. “And that conversation — I feel like with any issue, if you can’t keep the conversation going, it’s impossible to sustain any momentum.”

She elaborated on the effect of Time’s Up and #MeToo, explaining that for the first time, inappropriate conduct at the highest levels is starting to have consequences.

“I think we’ve lived in a world where women have been so let down for so many years; in a very unhealthy way, we’ve almost gotten used to it,” the Atomic Blonde actress said. “So to see some accountability for some of the actions that are just deplorable, is…it feels like we are finally being heard and that things aren’t being brushed under the rug anymore. These are civil rights, this is just something that should have already been and we should have been done with.”

The actress, 43, also opened up about her mother Gerda and how she’s found strength over the years following her shooting of Theron’s father in self-defense.

“I think we all have to find our own footing. None of us are born knowing how to navigate life and difficult decisions — especially for young girls,” Theron told Extra at the event. “No matter who you are or where you come from, the struggle is maybe a little bit different, but all interconnects. I am lucky enough that I had a great mom who really kind of made me brave and always told me to be brave. I don’t know who I might have been without that.”

When confronted with the subject of Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s accusations against President Donald Trump’s supreme court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, Theron revealed that she felt “extreme sadness” with Trump’s actions.

“I can’t imagine if that was his daughter, how he would feel if somebody did that,” Theron said.
