George and Amal Clooney, Reese Witherspoon, Paul McCartney and more joined March For Our Lives rallies across the United States over the weekend. Dozens of other celebrities shared their support on social media in a bid to end gun violence.

Across the United States this weekend, hundreds of thousands of people marched to promote firearm control and put an end to gun violence. Joining the brave students who created the March For Our Lives movement after the tragic school shooting in Florida earlier this year were some of the world’s biggest celebrities. In Washington D.C., George and Amal Clooney walked hand in hand with the crowds. The Clooney’s, as well as Oprah and Steven Spielberg, had previously donated $500,000 to the campaign, while Amal spoke out about how impressive the student’s determination was.

On Friday ahead of the march, George wrote a letter to students organising the campaign which was published on The Guardian. “Amal and I are 100% behind you and will be marching in DC on the 24th, but we both feel very strongly that this is your march. Your moment. Young people are taking it to the adults and that has been your most effective tool”, he wrote. “The fact that no adults will speak on the stage in DC is a powerful message to the world that if we can’t do something about gun violence then you will.”

In New York, Sir Paul McCartney marched alongside members of the public (pictured in header image). “One of my best friends was killed in gun violence right around here, so it’s important to me”, the former Beatle told CNN, referring to fellow Beatle John Lennon, who was shot in 1980.

In Los Angeles, Reese Witherspoon teamed up with Big Little Lies costar Laura Dern to attend the march, posting the following image on Instagram.

While members of the Parks and Recreation cast reunited in Washington D.C. to march together.

Other celebrities shared their support on social media. Writing on Instagram, Taylor Swift said: “No one should have to go to school in fear of gun violence. Or to a nightclub. Or to a concert. Or to a movie theatre. Or to their place of worship”, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said: “I’ll always stand for open dialogue and action – it’s the only way to ensure bad history doesn’t repeat itself. When it comes to protecting our children, all bets are off and the responsibility lies with us adults and lawmakers to listen and do. Very strong day.”

“Kids change everything”, Jennifer Lopez wrote, with the hashtag #enoughisenough. Earlier this month, the Obama’s spoke out about how important movements such as these are. “How inspiring to see it again in so many smart, fearless students standing up for their right to be safe; marching and organizing to remake the world as it should be”, Barack Obama wrote.

It is estimated that 800,000 people attended March For Our Lives rallies throughout the United States, making it one of the biggest mass movements in the country’s history.
