Hollywood actress Cate Blanchett may be known for her work in film but now she is heading to the small screen joining an all-star cast on an Australian TV series set inside a detention centre.

The ABC and Screen Australia has announced the commissioning of a brand new powerful six-part drama series Stateless, featuring an A-list cast including Cate Blanchett.

Jai Courtney, Asher Keddie, Fayssal Bazzi, Yvonne Strahovski and Dominic West are some of the other stars who will join Cate Blanchette on the TV series described as an urgent and compelling drama about four people caught up in an immigration system that profoundly affects their lives.

The characters include a flight attendant fleeing a cult, an Afghan refugee, a down-and-out Australian father and a bureaucrat entangled in a scandal.

When their lives cross they are pushed to the brink of sanity, as unlikely and profound emotional connections are formed. Inspired by real events, the series intertwines gripping and devastating personal stories revealing a system struggling with the irreconcilable contradictions of border protection.

In addition to starring in the production, Blanchett is also co-creator and executive producer. “Whilst this story centres on Australia, the dilemmas that it explores through four absorbing characters will resonate globally: the desire for personal freedom, the need for social stability, an escalating lack of faith in the political process and the deeply unsettling impact this has on individual lives,” she says of the drama series.

Blanchett, who started her career in small roles on Australian TV shows such as Police Rescue and GP, will head to South Australia next month to film the TV series.

Major production funding for the series comes from Screen Australia and the ABC, with additional financial support from the South Australian Film Corp.

“We were pleased to support the development of this landmark series, with its all-female writing and directing team, including some of Australia’s leading key creatives,” says Courtney Gibson, chief executive of the South Australian Film Corp.

Stateless is expected to air on the ABC in 2020.
