Cate Blanchett has opened up about why Ocean's 8 and its all-female cast is so important.

Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett is set to star alongside Sandra Bullock, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson and other talented actresses in the upcoming film Ocean’s 8. Featuring an all-female lead cast, the spin-off of the Ocean’s Eleven film series sees Debbie Ocean (Bullock) gather a group of female thieves to pull off a major heist at New York’s annual Met Gala.

Blanchett said creating the film was an incredible experience. “Making Ocean’s 8 was too much fun! I hope and trust it will be as much fun to watch as it was to make”, she told Evening Standard. “It’s funny because you don’t worry about what you’re missing until you experience it. Something that all of us were saying is that an all-female starring cast is so rare.”

The 48-year-old added that the film’s female cast is incredibly important in the age of the Time’s Up movement. “You get maybe one, two or three of you — but to get eight of you that have all got really interesting roles that are all playing off one another is very rare. It’s happened to me in the theatre a little bit but it’s never happened to me before in film. So it’s hopefully to be oft repeated.”

The film has already received some criticism for it’s all-female cast, causing Bullock to hit back. “We’ve got some feisty women that will fight right back,” the actress told Entertainment Weekly. “There should be a rule, you’re not allowed to say anything nasty until after [the film] comes out. Obviously that’s never going to happen.” She compared the experience to the criticism the 2016 all-female reboot of Ghostbusters receieved. “Forget what the final product was! There were four or five of the most talented comediennes in that film. Everyone should’ve just taken a breath and said, ‘let’s see what happens’.”
