The Ākina Foundation is currently seeking 10 inspired business ideas that aim to make life better for all New Zealanders.

Ākina, the Maori word used to describe “a call for bold action”, is the apt new name of the Hikurangi Foundation, established in 2008 by the Todd and Tindall Foundations, to fund and support grassroots and community-led innovation in New Zealand.

The Ākina Foundation is currently seeking 10 inspired business ideas that aim to make life better for all New Zealanders – calling for applications from people with ideas for social or environmental change for its new Launchpad programme.

Successful applicants will receive concentrated mentoring and tailored support throughout the six-month programme. The support is designed to radically improve their prospects of success.

The new programme, which is co-funded by the Department of Internal Affairs and Contact Energy, aims to help develop and grow the social enterprise sector across the country as part of what is described as the “next chapter” in the Hikurangi story.

“We believe social entrepreneurs and social enterprise represents a powerful opportunity to build a new economy that regenerates the environment and creates social foundations for people to thrive,” Ākina Chief Executive Alex Hannant says.

Applications close on June 29, 2014 and can be made via contactlaunchpad.org.nz.
