Buckingham Palace Steps In
The royal palace has broken tradition with a rare statement supporting Prince Harry's right to privacy.

As rumours of an impending engagement announcement from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reach boiling point, Buckingham Palace has stepped in to protect the royal. Speculation as to whether Harry and Meghan were engaged, when the announcement would happen – if it happened – and what would come next has been growing for months.

Last year Harry released an official statement calling for the press to stop harassing Meghan about their relationship. The statement, posted on Kensington Palace’s Twitter, read “Harry’s girlfriend, Meghan Markle, has been subject to a wave of abuse and harassment… Prince Harry is worried about Ms. Markle’s safety and is disappointed he has not been able to protect her.” It finished by saying that “[Harry] hopes that the press who have been driving this story can pause and reflect before any further damage is done.”

Now, Buckingham Palace has taken the situation into their own hands, refusing to comment on the speculation and instead saying they “would not give a running commentary on Harry’s love life”, Hello! reports.

This statement again calls into question the ethics of the media and when the line is crossed. For Harry, whose mother Princess Diana famously died in a car crash after being chased by paparazzi, the invasion of privacy by members of the press has been an ongoing issue. The statement last year highlighted this fact, reading “[Harry] is aware there is significant curiosity about his private life. He has never been comfortable with this, but has tried to develop a thick skin about the level of media interest that comes with it.”
