Broadway theatres are dimming their marquees in memory of Sopranos actor James Gandolfini, during his funeral service in NYC today.

Suffering a heart attack in Rome last week, the response to the much-loved 51year-old actor’s death has been overwhelming, flooding in from all corners of the globe.

Gandolfini made such an impact on his home city, that theatres throughout the Broadway district are dimming their marquees in his honour.

“James Gandolfini was a consummate actor who brought individuality to each role and inspired a true connection with the audience,” Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of The Broadway League, said in a statement.

“Our thoughts go out to his family and friends, and certainly to all of his fans who felt as if they knew his characters.”

Most famous for his portrayal of conflicted mafia head Tony Soprano in the Emmy Award-winning series The Sopranos, Gandolfini was holidaying in Italy with his 13-year-old son in Rome at the time of his death. He had been expected to attend the closing of the Taormina Film Festival in Sicily while over there.

The actor had been busy working on a new HBO series, Criminal Justice, and two new films due out next year, having ramped up his foray into the silver screen in recent months with roles in recent films Zero Dark Thirty and Killing Them Softly.

Gandolfini’s body was flown to the US over the weekend for his funeral service, happening today at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in midtown New York.
