BREAKING: No new cases of COVID-19, reports Bloomfield
New Zealand has recorded no new cases of COVID-19 today.

One probable case already which was already known has been reclassified as confirmed.

The total remains at 1,487 with no additional deaths.

There remain 16 clusters, with three of them now closed.

“Clearly these are encouraging figures today,” says Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield. “But it is just one moment in time.”

Bloomfield says the real test is later this week when we factor in the incubation period for the virus, following the move to level 3. That’s when we’ll have an indication of any community transmission during level 3, he explains.

“It remains very important for us to maintain discipline around this and be vigilant,” he adds.

The Director-General’s message follows a weekend of 685 reported breaches, with enforcement action taken against 112 people.

Speaking to RNZ this morning, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern says it is the few people who jeopardising the rest of the country.

“I certainly don’t want to see our team of 5 million punished for the behaviour of a few,” said Ardern. “This is about getting out of the heavy restrictions we have at the moment and we are more likely to do that if we abide by the guidelines and restrictions we have in place.”
