Here in New Zealand, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches.

From the turquoise waters of Abel Tasman, to the sun-drenched sands of the Bay of Islands, to the rugged and wild West Coast.

Take a look at our favourite hidden beaches and lesser-known bays throughout the country.

Explore the wild and rugged northern-most point of the South Island, New Zealand. Wharariki Beach is a beautiful tourist attraction and destination, offering peaceful and breathtaking views along the coastline.

 

Known as Aotearoa’s little tropical paradise, the Bay of Islands offer countless beaches and spectacular views across the regions 144 islands. Elliot Bay near Russell is a hidden surfer’s paradise, while Robertson Island offers some of the best views in the area.

Auckland is home to many beautiful beaches – some of them lesser-known but still equally stunning. Take a road trip up the North Shore coast to St Leonards Bay, Mairangi Bay and Long Bay Regional Park. 

 

A true tropical oasis, Abel Tasman is home to many breathtaking beaches, inlets and coastal tracks. Kayak around the marine reserve or visit Awaroa Beach, which was famously bought by Kiwis through a crowdfunding campaign.

 

Nestled amongst towering cliffs, Dunedin’s Tunnel Beach is a must-visit spot if you’re in the region. Among the sights is a beautiful natural archway alongside the headland of coastal turf.

The massive, round boulders of Moeraki Beach are a true sight to behold. Located on the lower East Coast of the South Island, the beach is famous for its spectacular geological rock formations.

A short drive out of Auckland city takes you to Piha beach and its mighty Lion’s Rock.

Situated in the Catlins of the South Island, Tautuku Beach is a expansive bay that’s fringed by a forest and sweeps around to a stunning headland. Whales are slowly returning to the region and can occasionally be spotted in the bay, along with sea lions and yellow-eyed penguins.

The location for iconic movie scenes, Cathedral Cove shows of the best of the beautiful Coromandel Peninsula. Take a boat or a bushwalk to arrive at this charming sandy bay.

Whale Bay at the Tutukaka coast on the North Island is a favourite among locals, perfect for swimming, snorkelling and picnics.
