It's a Win! Australia's First Gold at the Winter Paralympics
Australia and New Zealand are proving their skill at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang.

Australia has won its first Winter Paralympics gold medal in 16 years with Queenslander Simon Patmore claiming gold in the Snowboard Cross SB-UL. Patmore is unique in being the first man and second person to win medals at both summer and winter Paralympics. “To have this gold medal around my neck is an indescribable feeling”, he wrote on Instagram. “I’m the happiest person in the world right now. This medal isn’t just for me, it belongs to my team, my family, my girlfriend, my coach and everyone who has supported me along this incredible journey. This is a great moment for Paralympic sports in Australia.”

Alpine skier Melissa Perrine also won a medal for Australia when she finished third in the Vision-impaired Super-Combined. The 30-year-old finished just 3.1 seconds behind gold medal winner Henrieta Farkasova of Slovakia. Patmore and Perrine’s medals mean the Australian team has already topped their performance in Sochi, where they won two bronze medals.

To come from 7th, into first for a little bit and then hang on and jump into third is remarkable. It sets me up well going into the Slalom on Saturday. We’ll take this with both hands for sure.”

The bronze is New Zealand’s second at the 2018 Winter Paralympics, after Corey Peters’ claimed bronze in the Men’s Downhill Sitting event. Peters is now set to compete in the Giant Slalom Sitting.
