Auckland level 2.5 extended, rest of country likely to move to level 1 in one week

Auckland level 2.5 extended, rest of country likely to move to level 1 in one week
Marking two weeks since Auckland moved to alert level 2.5, Jacinda Ardern has announced cabinets decision on the review of alert levels.

In Auckland, the current alert level ‘2.5’ restrictions have been extended and will be reviewed on Monday, 21 September.

In that review, cabinet will look to increase gathering limits in Auckland if the region is in a similar position with containment of the cluster.

Should that be agreed by cabinet, the changes will come into effect from Wednesday, 23 September.

The rest of the country will move to alert level 1 at 11:59 pm on Monday, 21 September. This is contingent on cases tracking as they are and containment maintained, says Ardern. This will be confirmed on Monday when cabinet meets.

Ardern says modelling indicates a 25 per cent chance of the virus spreading outside of Auckland, hence the caution over moving to level 1 immediately.

Ardern also announced a change in physical distancing on planes and public transports. The government will ease physical distancing on planes, buses and trains, meaning they do not need to maintain seating restrictions or capacity limits.

Masks will still be compulsory on public transport.
