Anne Frank’s Hidden Diary Pages Discovered
Two new pages from Anne Frank's diary have been found, revealing even more insight about the famous teenager.

New pages of Anne Frank’s diary have been found and published, containing content that may surprise readers of the original. The new pages of the Jewish teenager’s famous diary were covered with gummed brown paper to hide them. Researchers have used new imaging techniques to uncover the text.

In her hidden pages, dated 28 September 1942, Frank writes a number of dirty jokes and shares her thoughts on sex education. “I’ll use this spoiled page to write down ‘dirty’ jokes”, the 13-year-old wrote, before scribbling down jokes including: “Do you know why the German Wehrmacht girls are in the Netherlands? As mattresses for the soldiers.” Frank had also written a little about sex education and “the talk”, BBC reports.

On its decision to publish the hidden pages, The Anne Frank Museum said they were of academic use. “Over the decades Anne has grown to become the worldwide symbol of the Holocaust, and Anne the girl has increasingly faded into the background,” it said in a statement. “These – literally – uncovered texts bring the inquisitive and in many respects precocious teenager back into the foreground.”

Anne Frank received the diary for her 13th birthday, just months before she went into hiding on 5 July 1942 in a secret annexe of her father’s business. She died in a Nazi death camp in 1945. Her father published the diary in 1947.
