Air New Zealand launches new 90s throwback safety video

The new Air New Zealand in-flight safety video is authentically Kiwi as.

With a six hundred-strong cast, Air New Zealand’s new 90s themed safety video – It’s Kiwi Safety – launched on Monday, and is the airline’s 18th creative attempt at an in-flight safety demonstration, but probably the most authentically New Zealand.

Filmed at a variety of locations in the country, including Auckland, Wellington and Dunedin, it is the largest-scale safety video ever produced by the Auckland-based airline.

The music video has gone live in planes from Tuesday morning, with Hunt for the Wilderpeople actor Julian Dennison adding his comedic touch to it, alongside Auckland hip-hop artist Kings and singer Theia.

Styled like a music video, It’s Kiwis Safety is set to the tune of In the Neighbourhood by nineties New Zealand hip hop and R&B duo Sisters Underground and a Kiwified version of Run DMC’s 1986 hip hop hit Get Tricky. The altered lyrics to the latter: “It’s Kiwi to rock around, to rock around that safe old block. It’s Kiwi, Kiwi, Kiwi, Kiwi, Kiwi!”

While the safety video includes all the greatest safety hits – no smoking (or vaping), listen to the crew, fasten your seatbelt when the sign is on, put on your own oxygen mask first – it also introduces a new element with raps such as: “Emergencies are unlikely, but if one did arise, just be calm, keep it cool, do your thing and please be kind.”

Among others in the video are pilots on BMX bikes and ground staff twerking in locations around New Zealand.
