Adelaide & South Australia
With winter well and truly here, now is the perfect time to plan your perfect South Australia holiday. Just a 4.5 hour non-stop flight from Auckland, it’s easy to discover Adelaide and South Australia with Air New Zealand. From houseboating and river cruising on the Murray River, wine tasting in the Barossa, fabulous nature and wildlife experiences on Kangaroo Island or simply spend your time in the city and explore Adelaide’s funky bars and eateries, fabulous shopping and festivals.

Vibrant Adelaide City
Known as the ’20-minute city’, Adelaide is the gateway to all there is to see and do in South Australia. It is both cultural and cool, and its superb shopping, beaches, history and restaurants are not to be missed.
Join the café culture lifestyle of Adelaide and explore the quaint laneways, home to food markets, highly awarded fine dining restaurants, pop up bars and food trucks.
Rundle Street in Adelaide’s east end includes a mix of historic pubs and family-run cafes and restaurants. Dine alfresco, morning, noon and night. Five minutes away, Norwood Parade is famously European influenced while Gouger Street, which is close to Chinatown and the Adelaide Central Market is crammed with Asian restaurants.
You’ll find plenty of accommodation in Adelaide – boutique hotels, apartments, seaside resorts and heritage cottages. Most hotels are in the city centre, however there’s a number of hotels, motels and bed and breakfasts in nearby North Adelaide and along the coast.

Taste Your Way Around
It seems like all roads lead to wine and food in South Australia, so if it’s wine and food you’re into there are 270 cellar doors across the state’s 17 wine regions. Many sell fresh, regional produce and most are within 90 minutes of Adelaide city.
Start in the Adelaide Hills, just a short 20-minute drive from Adelaide’s city centre. With its interlinking villages and cellar door restaurants, you can spend the day exploring and tasting the region’s fresh produce and vibrant wines.
Less than an hour drive from Adelaide and you’re in Australia’s most famous wine region – the Barossa. Discover the tastes and sights of the region by following the Butcher, Baker, Winemaker Trail, or roll up your sleeves and get hands on at a wine-blending or cheese-making class.
South of Adelaide, McLaren Vale boasts 70 boutique wineries within 45 minutes drive of the city. McLaren Vale is best known for its great vineyard restaurants and relaxed coastal lifestyle. It’s also a region of outstanding fresh produce, including its famous almond groves – all of which can be tasted at Saturday’s popular Willunga Farmers Market. Be sure to get there early.

Cruise the Murray River by Luxury Houseboat
Just an hour from Adelaide is the majestic Murray River. Take an escorted river cruise or, if you feel like creating your own adventure, get a group of friends together and captain your own houseboat.
Unforgettable Houseboats are a popular option for Kiwis. With 11 boats in their fleet (ranging from two to 12 berths), there is a boat to suit everyone’s tastes and holiday requirements.
Whether cooking a meal on the BBQ or in the gourmet kitchen (complete with dishwasher, freezer and microwave) relaxing in the Jacuzzi, or watching the stars from the top deck, these “floating baches” exceed all expectations.
If you’d like to add a little more action to your houseboating holiday, Unforgettable Houseboats can organise golf, waterskiing, kayaking, wine tasting tours to the Barossa, or a nocturnal wildlife expedition. And for that special treat, book a private chef to come onboard and let someone else do the cooking.

Get Off The Beaten Track
If wildlife and nature are what you’re looking for, Kangaroo Island is regarded as one of the best places in Australia to get up close and personal with an abundance of flora and fauna.
Just a short flight from Adelaide, or a 90 minute drive and 35 minute ferry ride, Kangaroo Island is easily accessible by day tour from Adelaide. Or pick up a rental car and enjoy 3-4 days exploring.
If you have more time, head further afield to the Eyre Peninsula and the Flinders Ranges and Outback. Both are just four to five hours drive from Adelaide. These unique regions offer some of the most spectacular scenery, culture and wildlife experiences in Australia.
For something really unique, head to the Eyre Peninsula just a short regional flight from Adelaide. From Port Lincoln you can swim with sea lions (like puppies in the ocean), get in a cage and dive with Great White Sharks, or follow the fantastic Seafood Frontier self-drive trail and discover the region’s fabulous food and wine.
