Hillary Clinton has received an email she probably didn’t want to open – nearly 15,000 emails recovered by the FBI from her private server when she was secretary of state are to be made public just before the presidential election.
The US State Department said it was reviewing documents that came to light in the investigation into the handling of sensitive information that flowed through the server in question.
The FBI cleared Clinton of criminal conduct but found her to have have been “extremely careless” and the saga continues to dog her.
State lawyers told Judge James Boasberg on Monday they expected to release the emails in batches on 14, 21 and 28 October and 4 November. The election, against Donald Trump, takes place on 8 November.
Trump, meanwhile, seems to have changed step – if not completed an about-turn – on one of his most hard-line policies.
He now says he wants to come up with a “really fair” plan to address the millions of undocumented immigrants in the US.
The softer comments from Trump follow months of vows to build a wall along the US border with Mexico and deport immigrants who have entered the country illegally.
Any reversal on immigration by Trump would be a political defeat, considering he has said repeatedly that “we don’t have a country” if border laws are not enforced.
And his wife Melania’s lawyers are taking legal action against the UK Daily Mail for reporting “100% false” rumours that she worked as an escort in the 1990s as well as raising questions about her immigration status at the time.
While Trump has a reputation for suing, it is unusual for a major party nominee or their spouse to mount legal action against a publication only months before an election.
