7 tasty ideas for using up your overripe fruit.

It happens more often than many of us would like to admit, we buy too much fruit, don’t eat enough and it ends up overripening. So how can we ensure that all our fruit is used up – and in good time? Here are a few ideas for using up fruits that are past their prime.

Make Jam: A quick jam recipe is a great way to use overripe strawberries — or any other fruits that need using up.

Make smoothies: Just about any fruit can go into a smoothie, so go ahead and toss it in.

Throw it into a pie: Just as with cobblers, crisps and crumbles, fruit softens and loses some of its shape when cooking in a pie — making it the perfect place to use overripe fruit. Try this: Classic Peach Pie With Ricotta Custard Or Ricotta Ice Cream.

Make Juice: If you have a juicer, your fruits can go right on in. If you don’t, try pureeing the fruit in a blender or food processor and straining it. The solids are great on top of yogurt and the juice can be drunk on its own or added to glasses of sparkling water.

Make Popsicles: Try make frozen popsicles or fruit ice blocks — this will sure to be a favourite with the kids as afternoon snack on a hot summer day. You can juice the fruit first and strain out the solids, but it’s also nice leaving some of the fruit a little chunky so that there are pieces to nibble.

Make compote: Compote is a fancy word for thick sauce. Cooking down fruit and adding a touch of seasonings like cinnamon, black pepper, lemon zest or ground anise makes a great compote to serve with a cheese plate.
