Earlier this month, we shared the story of recent protests from a Nigerian village following the six-month anniversary since over 200 women and girls were abducted by the extremist group Boko Haram. Today outcry can again be heard following further abductions from north-eastern Nigerian towns.
40 girls were taken from Wagga by Islamic extremists who were knocking door-to-door looking for young women to marry. At the house of each of the abducted it was reported they left 1,500 naira and some kola nuts as a bride price.
A following 20 girls were soon after reported stolen from the nearby town Gwarta.
These abductions took place despite proposed truce and peace talks with the aim of freeing these girls taken as hostage.
“We are confused that hours after the so-called ceasefire agreement has been entered between the federal government and Boko Haram insurgents, our girls were abducted by the insurgents,” told John Kwaghe, who lost three daughters in the attacks.
President Goodluck Jonathan has been met with much flak due to his slow response to the issue of these abductions. While the ceasefire talks between the government and Boko Haram have reportedly been successful, the girls have still been long in captivity ever since.
“We urge the government to please help rescue our daughters without further delay, as we are ready to die searching,” said Kwaghe.
