Best-selling erotic fiction novel, 50 Shades of Grey is being adapted for the screen, to the delight of squealing women worldwide.

We’ve been hearing rumours that the number one selling fantasy book by British author E. L. James would be getting a cinematic treatment for some time now, but considering all those X-rated scenes, we were dubious.

According to film studio Focus Features’ Facebook page (Focus will reportedly work alongside Universal Pictures), it looks like it’s well in the works. The studio announced that they are working towards a 2014 winter release, following the announcement with an image of 50 Shades character Christian Grey’s helicopter, plus a link to the upcoming film’s own newly created Facebook page.

Screenwriter Kelly Marcel was hired to pen the screenplay last October, while finding a suitable director took a bit longer. Finally, they settled on Sam Taylor-Johnson (who helmed the John Lennon biopic Nowhere Boy), and who is also the wife of Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor Johnson. According to Variety, Aaron is also up for the role of young billionaire Christian Grey, the man at the centre of the story about the living out of a college student’s sexual fantasies. Another actor reportedly interested in the role is The Vampire Diaries’ brooding Ian Somerhalder (pictured).

The 50 Shades of Grey trilogy was translated into 50 different languages and sold more than 70 million copies worldwide. Do you think the film will be as lucrative? And more importantly, who do you think should be cast as Christian? Tell us below or over on Facebook or Twitter.
