The 2018 Commonwealth Games have officially begun, after an impressive opening ceremony focusing on indigenous culture.

The 2018 Commonwealth Games kicked off with a stunning opening ceremony at Carrara Stadium last night. Viewers were treated to an impressive show that celebrated Australia’s indigenous culture and acknowledged the relaxed beach vibe of the host city, the Gold Coast.

Flagbearer Sophie Pascoe – the first Paralympian to carry the New Zealand flag at a Commonwealth Games – led more than 150 members of  Team New Zealand into the stadium.

From the stands, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull applauded as Team Australia, led by tennis player Mark Knowles, entered to enormous cheering.

The Games were officially opened by Prince Charles, who arrived at the ceremony with wife Camilla. “I have been asked by the Queen to represent Her Majesty and to convey the following message to you all”, he told the crowd. “I send my warm wishes to every competing individual and team and to all those who have helped to bring about the first Commonwealth Games in this very special part of Australia… The Gold Coast. Your Excellencies, ladies and gentlemen, it now gives me the greatest pleasure to declare the XXI Commonwealth Games open.”

The first day of the Games will see several Kiwis competing, starting with Jo Edwards in Lawn Bowls this morning. Other events today include the Triathlon, Swimming, Women’s Hockey, Boxing, Cycling, Gymnastics and Squash.
