I’m sensing a fresh scent in the air. After a long period of atypical models and actresses dominating the beauty landscape, a new direction is emerging. Cue beauty campaigns being fronted by women who have as much to say as they have to show.
Over the weekend it was announced that Bobbi Brown’s new celebrity spokesmodel from the July 2014 campaign will be American model and actress Kate Upton. Ms. Brown describes Upton as “healthy, comfortable in her own skin, … a women who creates her own rules.”
Aligning with Bobbi Brown Cosmetics’ Pretty Powerful motto, the curvilicious model says she admires the brand’s “idea that women can be beautiful being exactly who they are and I love that.” Upton has faced web criticism in the past for her normal shape, and has been outspoken in her ridicule of those who disparage her for how she was born.
Elsewhere in beauty land, it was recently announced that Sharon and Kelly Osborne will have their own M.A.C collections, to launch down-under this August. For sure the 61-year-old Sharon has admitted to having work done in the past, but both women are known primarily for spouting their opinions and walking a path that goes in an aesthetically and stylistically alternate direction to the Hollywood norm.
The British supermodel Cara Delvigne may be a more physically obvious choice to front campaigns for the likes YSL, for whom she has been a beauty muse since 2013. But Delvigne’s anarchistic spirit is written large across her social media presence, and her quirky selfies, opinionated mouth and extra-curricular lifestyle that doesn’t play safe equally flout the norm.
Following in her footsteps, Redken recently announced that dynamic young American musician, model and DJ Sky Ferreira is their latest muse. The brand will align itself on social media with her many followers, where fans can experience her hair transformations first hand. Says Redken Worldwide general manager Shane Wolf: “She has a story to tell, and she’s not afraid to tell it.”
