Vienna creates equal love traffic lights ahead of Eurovision

Vienna creates equal love traffic lights ahead of Eurovision

Straight, gay and lesbian couples are depicted in Vienna’s new traffic lights as the city prepares to host a series of events linked to themes of tolerance.

It will also host this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, won in 2014 by the country’s cross-dressing Austrian singer Conchita Wurst.

The city has started setting up walk, don’t walk lights that show pairs of figures instead of the usual stick men.

Some depict a man and a woman; others, two women or two men.

The lights have been erected at 47 crossings and will stay up until June.

Vienna will host several events linked to tolerance and equality during that time, including: the Life Ball, Europe’s biggest charity event for Aids and HIV research.

Local pedestrians appeared neutral to positive when asked whether they liked the concept by reporters.

“I think this is a great idea,” said one pedestrian. “The topic of equality and equal treatment is a very important issue, and it is getting some attention through the campaign.”

However, not all Austrians feel the same way.

The Freedom party, a conservative local group, announced it will lodge a criminal complaint against Maria Vassilakou, theVienna council member who is in charge of traffic issues in the city.

They argue that the lights are a waste of taxpayers’ money at a cost of 63,000 euros and contravene traffic regulations.

But Vienna city says the lights conform to local laws and are a display of tolerance. They also hope the signals will draw more attention from pedestrians and reduce jaywalking.
