THE LOOK: The swinging 60s were all about volume and the bouffant, famously worn by Jackie Kennedy Onassis and Sophia Loren. A set of rollers was mandatory, but if you couldn’t achieve the soaring beehive height, a wig was the next best thing. Style saw the rise of hemlines, and the introduction of go-go boots and pillbox hats, along with brightly coloured prints that were as popular as the moon landing.. Photography by Jez Smith
THE LOOK: The 80s brought Hollywood TV dramas like Dynasty into trend with the blown-out ’do and big shoulder pads. Dripping in jewels and made up to the nines, sporting fur and lace, Joan Collins and Linda Evans brought Aaron Spelling’s hit show to the forefront of style. Madonna was the material girl; Flashdance gave us leg warmers and frizzy ’fros; and everyone wanted to copy the Lady Di ’do.. Photography by Jez Smith
THE LOOK: Today, fashion styles have been influenced by many previous fads: 1960’s geometric prints, 1970’s flares, 1980’s structured shoulders and 1990’s minimalism. But among the mix of ‘in-things’ hair colour takes on a modern shape with the introduction of ombré highlights donned by stars such as Rachel Bilson, Gisele BÃœndchen and Alexa Chung. Dressed with the more relaxed androgynous stylings of black and white and tonal colours, in 2011, less is more.. Photography by Jez Smith
THE LOOK: Welcome to the days of disco and Charlie girl. Hair trends were influenced by everyone from Farrah Fawcett with her flicks to Cher with her straight-down-the-middle parting. Deborah Harry gave hair a bit of punk attitude, and those inspired by the hippie subculture adopted the layered shag. We like to remember the more glamorous Studio 54 stylings, with this hairdo highlighting a more polished presentation.. Photography by Jez Smith
THE LOOK: The 90s saw the invasion of supermodels Kate Moss and Linda Evangelista, with their pixie hairdos and flawless figures. Fashion went fluoro and demin was worn with more denim. Clothing brands had to be designer – Armani, Gucci and Chanel, but most fondly remembered is ‘The Rachel’ haircut inspired by Jennifer Aniston’s character on the popular TV series Friends, with the layered look going from the most popular cut of the year, to the decade, to recorded history..
