The Julie Project

The Julie Project

It took photojournalist and documentary photographer Darcy Padilla 21 years to create her award-winning series Family Love 1993-2014 – Julie Project that follows the journey of an 18-year-old mother with HIV as she struggles with her illness, her past and drug addiction.

By focusing on one woman’s struggle, Padilla hoped to provide an in-depth look at social issues surrounding disadvantage and HIV, but also to create a record for the mother’s children of her story. The series won first place in the “Long Term Projects” category of the global World Press Photo competition 2015.

These five photographs are part of 30 powerful images in the series.

The World Press Photo Exhibition opens in Auckland on July 4 at Smith & Caugheys, Level 6, 253-261 Queen St, and runs until July 26.
