In selecting the ranges that Cavit&Co represent in New Zealand it has always been important to me, as owner, to work with companies that have the same ethos established at our design stores. That is, to have a strong passion for design, a deep appreciation of handcrafted detailing and finishes, and to work with the finest designers and materials.
Each of our suppliers specialises in creating timeless design that will make a long-lasting contribution to a home. One such supplier is McGuire, a business that’s been operating for more than 60 years on these same values. It was a perfect match for Cavit&Co, which launched the brand here in 2001.
I first fell in love with McGuire when I saw it displayed in a showroom of American furniture company Baker, in Paris in 1996. I loved the clean uncluttered lines, the attention to detail and the simplicity of the refined rattan core pins with joints, wrapped and protected by rawhide to give superior strength.
It really is fine furniture made of rattan – well above the standard of any other I have seen available anywhere else in the world. A single piece of McGuire can add a very special touch to any room. McGuire changed my idea of what rattan furniture was and how it could be used.
New Zealand has a similar lifestyle to California, where McGuire is based. While catching the essence of casual luxury, McGuire is unpretentious, optimistic, relaxed, warm and engaging. Its collection covers the range from indoor to outdoor, living, dining and bedroom furniture, enabling Cavit&Co to include McGuire beautifully into clients’ homes in New Zealand.
The founders of the company, John and Elinor McGuire, worked with top designers in America when they first launched in San Francisco more than 60 years ago. They fully understood the value of good design in creating a brand and have continued this liaison with leaders in the field – they now work with an enviable list of the world’s finest designers, including Barbara Barry, Bill Sofield, Thomas Pheasant and Jacques Garcia. This results in a fabulous meld of the finest manufacturing techniques and best design, creating pieces that will stand the test of time to become classics in their own right.

For the last 23 years Cavit&Co has been importing furniture and home accessories from some of the world’s finest manufacturers – including Baker, McGuire, Ralph Lauren Home, Lalique, Frette –
but has largely been regarded merely as a retailer.
Over these 23 years, Debbie Cavit (pictured above) has clocked up thousands of miles attending trade fairs around the world where she has collected an extensive portfolio of products, covering everything from very contemporary to traditional furnishings, lighting and accessories.
Cavit&Co has offered an interior design service for the last several years, but will be stepping this up in early 2015 with the launch of Debbie Cavit Interior Design.
This initiative will specialise in creating world-class interiors for clients throughout New Zealand and abroad. It will not only use Cavit&Co’s core brands, but will also pull widely from manufacturers Debbie has admired and personally selected from around the world and the finest of New Zealand’s craftsmen.
With this broad international view, Debbie and her in-house design team will work closely with each client to achieve the perfect style and finish where all the design elements, the furniture, the art and the objects are interlinked, creating the ideal home.
