Print princess Diane von Furstenberg is renowned for her signature prints in harmonious hues. Her 2012 Resort collection paired bright fluoros with black as did the futuristic looks of Christopher Kane who followed the fluorescent suit, showing a rainbow of tutti-frutti stripes that melted together like a colour wheel – yellows fading into oranges, reds and blues.

Italian design duo Dolce & Gabbana paraded clashing floral combinations down the spring/summer catwalk along with Roberto Cavalli, whose leopard prints and exaggerated florals first set a trend in the 1970s and are now the designer’s signature look.

It might seem like an optical illusion but merging your prints creates texture. Combining different fabrics is the first rule; try placing a chunky weave with a more refined silk or jersey, then pair smaller prints with more graphic imagery such as stripes, animal print or polka dots.
