Paris ‘love-lock’ bridge is dismantled

Paris ‘love-lock’ bridge is dismantled

It’s been a pilgrimage of sorts for lovers the world over. But now Paris’ famous “love locks” bridge is no more.

As a declaration of their adoration and love, hundreds of thousands of couples from around the world have attached padlocks to the city’s Pont des Arts, tossing the keys into the river Seine.

But according to Paris officials all this love is weighing heavy on the city sight. The padlocks, together, are believed to weigh in excess of 45 tonnes – causing damage to the bridge and safety concerns for those using the thoroughfare.

it seems there concerns aren’t unfounded, last summer a section of the bridge gave way to the the weight of the love locks.

Yesterday, city workers began the ‘heart-breaking’ task of taking a part the bridge’s lock-covered panels and to stop any future love-locking the panels will be replaced with plexiglass.

“It’s the end of the padlocks,” said Paris’ Deputy Mayor Bruno Julliard.

Still now word on what will become of the 70,000 plus keys that are believed to be at the bottom of the River Seine.

Take a look at photos below of the dismantling of the famous Parisian landmark:
