One man, a worthy cause and a LOT of facial hair

One man, a worthy cause and a LOT of facial hair

In 2009 Jimmy Niggles, lost one of his close friends to melanoma, one of Australia’s deadliest cancers. To honour his friend, he started growing his beard out and the attention he got gave him an amazing idea.

Established in 2013, Beard Season is a non-profit charity designed to raise awareness of melanoma through the conversation-starting powers of facial hair. ‘There was a serious gap in knowledge’ Niggles said and he wanted to raise awareness as ‘not enough people were getting checks’.

In the past few years, the movement has gone from strength to strength, with an international following and support from celebrities including Russell Crowe, David Beckham and Hugh Jackman. They also recently held a photographic exhibition in London of the ‘most admirable beards in the world’, shot by legendary artists, Mr Elbank.

Melanoma is one of the deadliest illnesses in the world and kills more young Australians than any other type of cancer. A simple skin check with your GP or a dermatological clinic can save your life through early detection.

Beard Season has encouraged many men, young and old, to ditch their razors and embrace their facial fuzz. Here’s a selection of the best via Beard Season’s Instagram:
