Celebrate is the name of Karen Walker Eyewear’s just launched collection celebrating its tenth birthday.
The limited edition range of Karen Walker classics reproduced in gold frames has been celebrated with a series of launch parties around the world with lots of cake and glitter.
Karen Walker was present for the New Zealand launch held in the Sapphire Room at Ponsonby Central on October 11 where guests had fun posing in the new gold frames amongst showers of gold confetti.
“When we first started doing eyewear campaigns we didn’t have much money and that’s why we didn’t do sweaty looking models on boats because we couldn’t afford them. Our budget for our first shoot was $5000 and we shot it on brooms and the talent cost us $150. But we still shot it in New York,” Walker said.
Another early campaign was shot on balloons which cost about $2. “They were good models,” Walker quipped.
Budgets aside, from the very beginning Walker has always wanted to steer of the clichéd shots of handsome/beautiful models with glistening skin posing on a beach and do something different, and she has.
By drawing inspiration from unlikely sources and extraordinary characters Karen Walker Eyewear has become one of the most sought after cult eyewear brands in the world.
The collection comprises 10 styles – one for each year.
