Canines with a love for the ocean and their human companions were treated to a day of doggy surfing fun with the fifth annual Surf City Surf Dog competition in Huntington Beach this week.
Pooches were able to “hang paws” over surfboards while cheered on by crowds of animal lovers, and were also given the chance to strut their stuff in a variety of other dog-gone fun activities and contests throughout the weekend event, which benefits various animal welfare organizations.
Huntington Beach’s coastal waters are legendary for their unique surf break and are the site of many elite surfing tournaments, including the US Open of Surfing, the largest surfing competition in the world.
The dogs competed in four weight-class divisions, as well as a tandem heat, and were judged on a variety of skills, including the duration of their ride and their confidence on the board.
Although “top dogs” were announced in all four heats, every pooch was a winner.
Looks like so much fun.
Are the US Surf Dogs competition cancelled when the waves are too big?
