Ireland votes yes to gay marriage

Ireland votes yes to gay marriage

Ireland has become the first country to legalise gay marriage by popular vote. The historic vote, with a massive majority win of 62% yes and 38% no, was celebrated in Ireland and all around the world as a symbol of hope and a step forward for Ireland from 1993 when homosexuality was a crime.

The prime minister of Ireland, Enda Kenny, said of the vote on the weekend,

“In the privacy of the ballot box, the people made a public statement. With today’s vote we have disclosed who we are. We are a generous, compassionate, bold and joyful people who say yes to inclusion, yes to generosity, yes to love, yes to gay marriage.”

This is fantastic news to hear. Indeed this is to be celebrated. Perhaps we may may follow suit to give people a choice that they truly deserve and have the right to make.
