Happy Birthday! Patrick the Wombat is now the oldest and largest wombat in the world.

Patrick the Wombat will become the oldest living wombat in the world today when he turns 30. Weighing in at nearly 40kg, he is also the largest wombat in the world.

Patrick became an overnight sensation last year around his birthday after Tourism Australia wished him happy birthday on their social media account. Within 24 hours he received 258,000 Facebook likes and reached over 6 million users.

The wombat, is a long term resident of Ballarat Wildlife Park, and was hand raised after being orphaned as a baby. After having a couple of attempts at releasing Patrick, the zoo keepers had no choice but to hold onto him because the gentle giant could not defend himself in the wild.

Wombats in the wild usually live till age five, and in captivity, closer to 20, but Patrick has surprised everyone by proving to be fighting fit at 30.

We think he looks amazing for his age. What a beautiful creature.
