Elderly women in China care for 1,300 dogs

Over the last six years, a group of elderly women in China’s central Shaanxi Province have taken it upon themselves to care for over 1,300 stray dogs.

The five women have even created their very own custom dog asylum. Every morning, at 4 am no less, these lucky canines are fed a total of 400kg of tasty food.

Established in 2009, the shelter was 60-year-old local Wang Yanfang’s idea. The animal-lover, relies solely on donations from generous well-wishers and fellow canine-lovers.

Even China‘s notoriously extravagant firework displays couldn’t lead Wang and her trusted colleagues away from their beloved strays. The group chose to spend New Year‘s Eve with the abandoned canines.

While the stray dogs aren’t always the friendliest of pups, as the women occasionally receive bites and nips, it’s never put them off.

“They’re like your children, you can’t bear to be apart from them, or to lose them,” Wang remarked to reporters recently.
