Drinking Crocodile Tears

Drinking Crocodile Tears

While to the untrained eye, this may look like a scene out of our favourite Disney films, it is actually a natural phenomenon that occurs in the animal kingdom.

Lachryphagy, or “tear feeding” is a process by which butterflies and bees sip the tears of various land animals to extract essential nutrients and minerals – especially sodium.

Butterflies and bees usually feast on nectar, which is a food source that is naturally low in sodium.  The important element is essential for egg production and maintaining a proper metabolism.

Researchers speculate that these species target animals like turtles and crocodiles, as well as larger mammals, due to their placid nature.
