Miuccia Prada steps back in time to the 1950s with Marilyn Monroe as her muse. Coats were more full-bodied, inspired by postwar designers, such as Jacques Fath and Christian Dior, who created the original swing-coat silhouette.. Upsizing also makes an appearance, with tailored double-breasted blazers.

Time-consuming, this textual trend evoking that homemade look might not have you learning how to loom, but it does inspire a nostalgic step back from the digital age. Combining different textured fabrics, from raffia to woven leather, is the must-wear mantra this season.

For the new season, we move on from summer’s kaleidoscope of pattern mixing to the more refined winter version combining spots and checks. Lace may have a vintage feel and bring to mind images of tablecloths and doilies, but it takes on a new role this season at Miu Miu, Louis Vuitton, Valentino, Christian Dior, and Chanel. This season’s sexy, almost boudoir, trend is a long way from its practical origins.

Sure, summer styles may have flaunted the sheer trend, but it re-emerges for winter in a sexy and subtle way. Sheer panelling is pronounced at Louis Vuitton, with an array of pastel shades of organza layering see-through fabrics. Skirts are accentuated with volume in the hips. Calvin Klein provides a sneaky peek by provocatively placing sheerness at the bust. Here at home, Collette Dinnigan plays peekaboo with form-fitting, vented silhouettes.

Flower power isn’t a trend to save for the summer months. In full bloom this season, from detailed prints to pretty portals, florals keep on giving! Casting an artful eye over this trend is Rodarte; its spring 2012 line took inspiration from the masterpieces of Vincent van Gogh, particularly Sunflowers.
