Celebrities strip off for Fishlove campaign

Celebrities strip off for Fishlove campaign

Dame Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter, Kathy Lette, Fiona Shaw and Julie Christie like you have never seen them before.

The actresses have stripped bare and posed with marine life for a series of photographs aimed at raising awareness of over-fishing.

The very startling images of the British celebrities have been released to coincide with World Oceans Day on June 8.

Created for the Fishlove campaign, in each picture the naked women cover their modesty with marine life, from fish, to lobsters.

Earlier this year similar images of Helena Bonham Carter posing naked and holding a 27kg tuna were released for the campaign and quickly went viral online.

Hence why the Fishlove charity sought to continue the success with more images of famous faces adorning themselves with sea life.

Dame Judi Dench opted for lobsters in her photographs because she ‘has a passion for them’.

‘The best part of the shoot was that it is not every day you get to cuddle one,’ she told reporters. ‘The worst part was that I didn’t get to eat it.’

The 80-year-old actress is particularly anxious to highlight the increasing acidity of the world’s oceans – a phenomenon caused by atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolving in the sea, which can have a detrimental impact on marine organisms and on the health of the lobster population.

‘I have always loved the sea,’ she said.

‘My brothers and I learnt to swim practically before we could walk, and swimming in the sea is unsurpassed.

‘I hope the campaign will achieve awareness of what we are doing to the planet.’

A particularly dramatic image in the series features fellow veteran Julie Christie, 75, who shot to fame in classic films such as Doctor Zhivago, lying naked and covered in small fish.

Posing on a bed of fish, seaweed and shells, her hair fanned out behind her, Christie’s modesty is just about preserved by a dogfish.

‘None of us should buy fish without checking its sustainability and in what manner it has been caught,’ argued Christie who is keen to end overfishing.

Actress Fiona Shaw, best-known for her role as Petunia Dursley in the Harry Potter films, also go in on the Fishlove action.

In her image, the 56-year-old is seen straddling a plastic chair while holding a ruby snapper between her legs.

Author Kathy Lette, also 56, is pictured with a large dogfish but unlike Christie, was photographed lying on her stomach.

Fishlove was set up by restaurateur Nicholas Rohl and theatre actress Greta Scacchi in 2009. According to the charity, it played a role in persuading chancellor George Osborne to create a marine-life reserve around the Pitcairn Islands, a British Overseas Territory in the South Pacific.
