MiNDFOOD STYLE caught up with Jane Grimme, Trenery’s head of womenswear to talk winter wardrobe essentials, breaking fashion rules and what to expect come spring and summer.
Tell us about the Trenery woman you have in mind when designing.
She is a woman interested in fashion, not trends. She is likely in her early to mid-forties, she may have children and is juggling family life with a career. She wants to look modern and stylish. She is confident, but will often look to fashion magazines or blogs to give her ideas about how to put things together.
While she knows who she is, she needs a little push to play with different silhouettes – and that is what we’re here for. The clothes need to be timeless and effortless – we design for what women need in real life.
What are some of your favourite trends for this winter?
For us, the season is about quintessential styles that have been updated with new silhouettes and reimagined in luxurious fabrics and rich colours – dark magenta, bottle green and navy. It’s all about softness, drape and texture and the perfect balance of new proportions. We’ll see a lot of knitwear as outwear, structured coats with a nod to military, pants are fuller and slightly cropped, and dresses and skirts are slightly longer.
What are your favourite pieces from the current Trenery collection?
Our flannel pants are a favourite, particularly the pleated style which I like to wear a bit over-sized for a relaxed work-wear look. We have a merino-cashmere yarn from Italy that we’ve knitted into a range of styles and I particularly love the Textured Roll-neck, which has a cool and flattering curved hem. I dress it up with trousers or down with a pair of jeans. And I love our knitted trench coat, which looks polished but is as comfortable as a cardigan.
What’s the one item that you can’t live without once winter arrives?
A black leather pant for cold winter days – this year we have a slim style in stretch leather. Otherwise a relaxed camel coat.
What are the three essentials every woman needs in their winter wardrobe?
A crisp white shirt, a great pair of white leather sneakers and a classic leather jacket.
Favourite way to spend a wintery weekend?
With my family, always at kids sports on a Saturday morning and then we love our local Saturday market. I have 3 children so it’s about spending as much time with them as possible, catching up on the week that’s been and preparing for the next one!
What’s one fashion rule that you think women shouldn’t be afraid to break?
Pairing navy and black – chic and modern.
Looking ahead to the summer, what trends do you think will be big in Australia and New Zealand?
At Trenery we like to distill the trends through our own lens. We are very excited about the direction of polished cotton fabrics, graphic prints and lots of saturated colour – always off beautiful neutral levels for us. We love the blocking of prints – piecing different prints together in a garment – and we love the way prints are turning up in more unexpected places, like a bomber jacket or pieced into a romper.
What should we expect to see from Trenery’s SS collection?
Spring Summer is very exciting because there is so much newness in silhouettes. There are lots of new shapes in pants and skirts, and dresses for the season are feeling really feminine, with lots of choice in body shape. As we are always led by our fabrications there will be beautiful stories of soft, neutral colour levels in textured and yarn-dyed linens, and there will then be contrasts of strong colour and crisp cottons and smooth silk.
