Sandler said the Safdie Brothers’ previous work attracted him to the project.

“Their other movies made an impact on me. I thought they were incredible filmmakers and the more and more I got to know the guys I loved them,” he said.

Sandler said he was excited to play the “bold character” of Howard Ratner, and he loved that the dialogue was “fresh” with “a new feel”.

“The dialogue was neat, it was very New York,” he explained.

“The scenes never landed in a place I thought they were going to land.”

Uncut Gems had a limited release, with the film initially showing in just five theatres.

The film gave entertainment company A24 it’s highest per-screen average in the studio’s history.
