As of this Sunday, it will be legal to consume hemp in Australia. The plant has been banned as an edible item in both Australia and New Zealand for decades, despite other countries such as Canada, Japan and Germany legalising its use.
Previously hemp has only been used in the construction, cosmetic and textile industries, even though it has a significant number of nutritional benefits. The superfood has a five-star health rating, is high in dietary fibre and protein, contains essential amino acids and has a perfect mix of Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids.
Australian Primary Hemp Director, James Hood, applauded the news. “This legislation marks a massive achievement for the hemp community,” he says. “It’ll open a whole new door for hemp to enter the Australian superfood market and hopefully spark more conversation around the environmental benefits of the plant.”
The change is expected to see a surge in farming industries as hemp demand increases. “There is currently a huge opportunity for Australian farmers to enter both the burgeoning local and established global markets,” says Simon Allen, a farm in the Western District.
