Winter is coming – or is it?

Bring out that winter wardrobe as below freezing temperatures in Australia and New Zealand this past week officially saw in the colder winter weather. But is it set to continue?

It’s been a cold and frosty week for much of Australia and New Zealand, an icy reminder that winter is on its way.

Temperatures in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra dropped into single-digit figures as a southerly cold front from Antarctica blew in the promise of winter. Across the Tasman in New Zealand, the country’s South Island has seen snow falls and scores of ski-enthusiasts head to the snow-caped mountains. “Clear skies and light winds this week have been perfect conditions for frost for much of New Zealand,” says Metservice meteorologist John Law.

Adelaide has already seen a battering of hailstorms and strong winds, while snow has fallen in parts of Tasmania and Victoria’s Alpine region, where temperatures have fallen below zero. The weekend has seen temperatures warm up slightly in Sydney and Melbourne after a mid-week freeze.

Is the cold here to stay?

The Metservice in New Zealand says that the weather seen in the past week due to the colder weather pushing up from the Antarctic, is just a reminder that winter is definitely on our doorstep. But while the recent cold snap has sent shocks through our systems, the Australian Beauru of Meteorogy says that its 2018 Winter Outlook for the country indicates warmer than average temperatures. “Warmer and drier than average conditions are expected across large parts of the country,” a statement read.

Similar predictions have been made for New Zealand, and according to the Herald, climate scientists have predicted the year will again be amongst the warmest ever .

As for the coming week, minimum temperatures in both Australia and New Zealand are set to remain in the single digits.
