First-grade student, Aysha Fatima, now has her Picasso-esque painting of the Statue of Liberty hanging in one of the most famous museums in there world – The Metropolitan Museum of Art – for a new exhibit.
P.S Art 2017 spotlights the work of younger New York students, from prekindergarten through to grade 12. The Met describes the works as demonstrating “personal experience, imaginative use of media, the results of close observation and an understanding of artistic process.” The artworks were chosen by a panel of art specialists from the Department of Education and Studio in a School, who selected 393 semifinalists from 1050 submissions. The exhibit, which will be on display from June 14 to October 29, allows students to see their work in a professional light.
Sandra Jackson-Dumont, the Museum’s Frederick P. and Sandra P. Rose Chairman of Education, told HuffPost in an interview: “One of the most powerful parts of the show is the moment when the young people realise their first ever show is happening at The Met.
“They’re looking for youth voice. Even at that age, we encourage them not to copy. We want them, as artists, to use their own creative impulses and let that guide the process.”
