What we can expect from Ricky Gervais as Golden Globes host
Ricky Gervais is about to make a return as host for the Golden Globe Awards, despite previously declaring he would never accept the gig again.

It will be the fifth time the British comedian has hosted the TV and film awards, and once again he’s claimed it will be the “very last time” he steps into the role.

Gervais, himself a Golden Globe winner, said the Hollywood Foreign Press Association had made him an offer he “couldn’t refuse”.

So what can we expect from the comic in 2020?

A promo for the Golden Globes released in November teased “as usual, you never know what he’s going to do”.

One thing’s for sure – we can look forward to more of the cringe-worthy humour that shocked audiences when he hosted between 2010 and 2012, and in 2016. Gervais can be trusted to take aim at the A-listers in the audience, PC culture, and political figures.

While appearing on The Graham Norton Show, Gervais confirmed he won’t be holding back.

“When I do it, I’m going to say what I want. I don’t have to rehearse. And they say that’s fine … I do have to tell a lawyer about it just before I go on,” Gervais said.

“People say, ‘Why do you go through so much trouble to offend people?’

“And I say, ‘It’s no trouble.'”

Gervais has previously taken aim at everyone including the audience, the awards themselves, the head of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, and individual celebrities.

He insulted the audience in 2016, calling them “disgusting, pill-popping, sexual deviant scum”, and he sent up the awards by telling attendees a Golden Globe is “no offence, worthless”.

He’s also known to bring up awkward and scandalous moments in stars’ pasts, such as Mel Gibson’s arrest for driving under the influence and his anti-Semitism controversy, and Caitlyn Jenner’s car accident in which another driver died.

Gervais took a number of jibes at then-presidential candidate Donald Trump when he hosted in 2016, so we can anticipate plenty more jokes about the president from the long-time Trump critic.

He’s said the fact that it will be the last time he is hosting “could make for a fun evening”, so we’re hoping for another no-holds-barred performance.

The awards will take place on January 5.
