What Makes a Great Skin Expert?
We find out from the winners of the Caci People's Choice award.

Earlier this month over 250 of the country’s best beauty therapists, nurses, clinic owners, treatment coordinators and support staff converged on Viaduct Harbour Events Centre to celebrate another year of skin expertise at the annual Caci Awards. Milestones and achievements were recognised over the course of the evening and for the first time, Caci introduced the People’s Choice Awards which invited clients from all over New Zealand to vote for their favourite registered nurse and beauty therapist.

We caught up with the winners of the inaugural People’s Choice to find out what makes a great skin expert.

How does your job impact on the lives of the people you treat?

Aimee: Quite often people will come in at the beginning of their journey and they’re quite down about their skin. It’s amazing watching that transformation happen. It really does make a huge change for them. It has such a big impact on their life. We really can make a big difference and follow them on that journey.

Kelly: Confident skin grows confident people. When your clients feel confident with how they look in the mirror they really carry themselves in a different way. And you really see that transformation a lot especially with hair growth and acne concerns.

Sarah: I just love people feeling better about themselves after they’ve been in my company. So whether that’s injecting a dose of filler or Botox, as long as they feel better about themselves, that’s what is really important. It’s important to establish trust, build rapport, ask heaps of questions and just listen and understand the client and their needs because what I think they need might not be what they want.

How do you make your clients feel at ease?

Amanda: It’s about treating someone how you like to be treated and tailor making the experience for the individual – not taking that cookie-cutter approach. It’s very individual and making sure you’re listening properly.

Aimee: I remember the first time I walked in for a facial and I felt really scared; so it’s remembering that and being really sensitive and listening. It’s making sure you’re listening every step of the way. You want them to feel confident in you.

Kelly: I relate it back to my life. I show them pictures of when I had bad acne. I show them that we’re human too. We’ve all got skin, we all have issues with our skin, we’ve got hair in places we don’t want it. It’s important to make it all relatable to being a person really.

What is it that you love about being part of the Caci team?

Sarah: What I like about Caci is that it moves away from instant gratification. We all want quick fixes, everyone likes that. But with the skin journey and Caci, it’s different. It helps people understand that home care is really important. It’s an actual journey, it’s not just about the destination and a quick fix. It’s about starting from the beginning and taking all the steps that will create success.

Kelly: When I was at college in Christchurch Caci was always where you wanted to get to where you wanted to be. And Caci is like a whole college again – we’re always learning, there’s lots of support. Different clinics do different things, but it really is like one big team.

Aimee: I always wanted to work at Caci, from the moment I started beauty therapy school. I’ve always admired their well-rounded approach to skin health, lifestyle and skincare. And you get to treat people constantly, rather than just seeing them as a one-off.
