The plant, which hails from the Cederberg Mountains, South Africa, has been sought-after by European collectors since the 1700s and belongs to the Ixia genus, famously recognised by its striking star-shaped yellow flowers.
In addition to the naming rights, the highest bidder will also receive the original botanical painting of the flower by South African botanical artist Lisa Strachan.
The invitation-only auction takes place at the Linnaean Society, London on June 24.
All proceeds raised at the auction will go to support WFF’s conservation work in East and South Africa.
