Kerry Washington has given a stirring speech calling for more inclusiveness in the media

Scandal actress Kerry Washington accepted the Vanguard award at this year’s GLAAD Media awards (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation award which recognise the advocacy of gay, lesbian, trans and intersex rights) and gave a stirring speech on inclusiveness in the media, and the recognition of everybody’s right to “basic liberties.”

“…On Monday morning, people are going to click a link to hear what that woman from Scandal said at that awards show, and so, I think some stuff needs to be said,” Washington said to the first of many enthusiastic rounds of applause.

In the speech Washington called for disenfranchised communities to be allies to each other and for inclusive representation of all people – behind and in front of the camera.

“women, poor people, people of color, people with disabilities, immigrants, gay men, lesbians, bisexuals, trans people, intersex people…have been pitted against each other and made to feel like there are limited seats at the table for those of us who fall into the category of other.”
