The United Kingdom and Spain have recorded their deadliest days amid the coronavirus crisis.

Spain reported 849 deaths in 24 hours on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 8189.

The cases of COVID-19 in the nation also rose by 9,222 in one day, with the total number of cases now sitting at more than 94,000.

Spain has become the third country to overtake China’s total infection count, following Italy and the US.

Meanwhile, Britain recorded 381 deaths, which brings its death toll to more than 1,700.

An Italian economist has warned UK and Spain are on the same trajectory as Italy.

In an interview with TPI, Francesco Del Prato said Italy is “not an exception”, arguing the country had been hit so hard because it is two weeks ahead of the rest of Europe.

“You can see it in the chart that shows the day-wise progression of COVID-19 deaths since the 10th death in each country,” he said.

“We are simply further ahead in the pandemic and therefore had more deaths.

“But if you look at the chart, right now, the UK and Spain are in a much worse situation than us.

“The numbers of deaths there is growing at a faster rate.”

Italy’s death toll from COVID-19 is the highest in the world at more than 12,000.
