13 new COVID-19 cases in New Zealand today, cluster reaches Tokoroa

There are 12 new confirmed cases and 1 probably case of COVID-19 in the community, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield reported.

Two of the cases are in Tokoroa, who were close contacts of the Auckland cluster. A community testing facility will be operating in Tokoroa over the weekend.

All of the 12 new cases have been linked to the cluster. For the last case, investigations are still underway to determine the source.

This brings the total number of active cases to 48, with 30 linked to the community outbreak. One person is in Auckland hospital.

Two other schools and a pre-school have been closed after one student tested positive. These are the Glamorgan School in the North Shore and Southern Cross Campus and Taeaofou | Puaseisei Preschool in Mangere.

A resident at the Morrinsville Kingwood rest home, where one of the cases visited, has tested negative for the virus, with further tests for residents awaiting results.

Dr Bloomfield says there have been reports of healthcare workers receiving verbal and physical abuse from the public.

“This is completely unacceptable,” says Dr Bloomfield. “I want to take a moment to sincerely thank them all.”

Cabinet is meeting at 3 pm today to make a decision about extending the alert levels.
