Turning Crab Shells Into T-Shirts: Allbirds Launches Innovative Apparel

Allbirds has dropped their first t-shirt apparel, made from an unlikely material sourced from the sea.

A few years ago, you wouldn’t think of turning sugarcane into shoes or crab shells into t-shirts.

But now, with sustainability moving to the fashion industry mainstream, repurposed and environmentally-conscious materials are becoming a sought-after staple – and Allbirds is at the forefront with their latest launch.

The TrinoXO Tee is the latest expansion in the Allbirds offering, a simple, soft t-shirt using their revolutionary materials.

Featuring their signature Trino yarn, the wool is spun with chitosan, a natural fibre derived from the shells of crabs that would otherwise have been thrown out.

True to Allbirds boundary-pushing reputation, it’s the first time the pure chitosan fibre has been used in apparel at this scale.

It boasts a 20 per cent lower carbon footprint than a standard polyester t-shirt, partly due to the clever material design that keeps it fresher for longer and requires fewer washes.

The TrinoXO Tee is the company’s second foray outside of apparel, after their Trino Underwear collection which launched earlier this year.
