Trapped members of a 4WD convoy in Central Otago have finally been rescued.

Rescuers have finally been able to reach all members of the 4WD convoy that became trapped after an unexpected snow storm.

Previous attempts to rescue the 36 passengers, spread across 13 4WDs, had been unsuccessful, due to their position on Waikaia Bush Road, some 4500ft above sea level.

All members have now begun the evacuation process with rescue teams transporting the men, women and children to a safety point, via snowcats, where they will then be transferred to Roxburgh.

The rescue operation is expected to take upwards of two hours, depending on weather conditions and other variables that could slow down the process.

The convoy had been trapped in their cars for nearly 20 hours before help arrived.

All members have been reported well and safe.
