Here are some top destinations and things to do on your Malaysian adventure…

Get started with our favourite things to do in Kuala Lumpur

Your Malaysian odyssey should probably begin on the bustling streets of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital. Its one of the world’s most amazing cities, famed around the globe for its culture, shopping, cuisine and architecture – a wonderful place where gleaming skyscrapers live side by side with colonial architecture.

Your eyes will immediately be drawn to the magnificent Petronas Towers – one of the world’s highest structures, which provides breath-taking views across the city. This 88-storey twin structure is Malaysia’s architectural crown jewel. Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir bin Mohamad, says that the building “symbolises the courage, ingenuity, initiative, and determination, energy, confidence, optimism, advancement and zest of a nation”.

While you’re near the towers, take in the Lake Symphony Light and Sound Water Fountain show, which is particularly magical at night. It’s right along the esplanade in KLCC Park – just one of the many magnificent touches of greenery in Malaysia.

Kuala Lumpur is also a shopper’s paradise. From the malls of Bukit Bintang to the Chinatown markets, Kuala Lumpur is one of the finest shopping destinations in the world. Whether you’re looking for luxury brand names, flagship stores, fashion, souvenirs to take home with you or exquisite arts and crafts created by local artisans, the city has so many malls, markets and shops you could find yourself browsing for hours.

You’re spoilt for choice when it comes to dining, too. You’ll soon see Malaysia’s fusion of Malay, Chinese and Indian influences come into their own on your plate. Enjoy the best of Cantonese dishes at the Michelin-starred Pang’s Kitchen, or try the sushi at Nobu at Petronas Tower 3. You can also sample local street food like dumplings, fried noodles and oyster omelettes at Lot 10 Hutong.

So many possibilities in Penang

Known as the ‘Pearl of the Orient’, Penang is one of the most fascinating islands in the region, famed for its buildings, food and hospitality. Indeed, the pearl has become a not-so-secret treasure in recent years, with many tourists flocking to this hotspot to enjoy all it has to offer.

Upon arriving in Penang, you will be surrounded by its rich history on the streets of George Town, the island’s capital. Formerly a British settlement, it is home to a variety of 19th-century churches, mosques and colonial buildings. It also has some of the best street art around: hire a bike and go in search of creative pieces such as the giant Kung Fu Girl mural.

You can also visit Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in South-East Asia, and the home of the 30-metre-high statue of Kuan Yin – the goddess of mercy. Alternatively, take a hike through Penang National Park, the smallest national park in the world. Or see the Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, which was featured in the movie, Crazy Rich Asians. (Indeed, the historic centre of George Town is a UNESCO World Heritage site.)

Penang is also regarded as the gastronomic capital of Malaysia. From street food to seafood, from rich curries to curry mee soup, from laksas to noodles, you simply can’t go wrong.
